From personal experience, I know that hard dog food is much healthier for your pet than is the soft kind. Hard kibble will help keep your dog's teeth clean and smelling better than it would otherwise. Soft food is fine as a special treat once in a while, much like chocolate and sweets are to humans.
 I have been feeding Newton Iams ProActive, it is made from more natural ingredients than other dog foods. It is also priced better by pound when compared to other popular brands; sure, it's only a few cents per pound but over the course of a year those few cents do add up!
When purchasing dog food, you should never buy more food than your dog can consume in approximately one month. I purchase a 20 lb bag usually once every 5 weeks for Newton who weighs 33 lbs and eats ~2 cups of food a day.
