Did you know Dogpile helps rescue pets? | Dog Breeds
There are many kinds of dogs to choose from these days. There are mutts, old breeds, and designer breeds. Please see below for descriptions of these types of dogs:
Mutts:
A mutt is any dog whose pedigree is unknown. A mutt disposition is very difficult to determine without spending time with the dog. If you have concerns about certain traits, you should discuss with a vet-tech/veternarian before you adopt a "mutt".
Old Breeds:
Old breed is a description of dogs that have been in use for many generations and no longer require breed specific trait selection. Labrador retriever or Poodle are very good examples of "Old breed" dogs, these dogs have a definite listing of traits and behaviors that have been agreed upon and are expected in today's dogs. Many of these dogs will be purchased from a breeder and will also have pedigree papers to confirm the dogs lineage and breed "purity". Some pure-breed dogs may be found in pounds or shelters because their owners are not able to keep them.
Common old breed categories:
|
American Dog Groups | British Dog Groups |
| Sporting | Gundog |
| Hound | Hound |
| Herding | Pastoral |
| Terrier | Terrier |
| Toy | Toy |
| Miscellaneous | Utility |
| Working | Working |
| Non-sporting | -No Equivalent- |
The above is a very short list of categories you can use to determine what breed you may be interested in. There are many dog breeds that have not been recognized by any kennel clubs/associations. If you are looking for a more exotic breed, or are interested in traits that you can not find in most kennel clubs, try searching for breeds that would be unique to a country or region. A search may look like, "dog breeds of Norway" or "highland dog breeds". Designer Breeds: Like many old breeds these dogs will have specific characteristics that breeders have selectively bred for to try to obtain them as a standard traits. The difference lies in the purpose of the selective breeding in today's "Designer" dogs; these dogs are commonly bred for their hypo-allergenic traits or diminutive size rather than task related traits such as herding or working. So what's the difference between a Mutt and a Designer Breed? A designer breed's lineage will be known, much like old breed pedigrees, along with its overall disposition.
